Aladdin
A Comic Book Graded Readers graded reader by Abraão Paula
Aladdin is a full-colour comic book graded reader that adapts the classic tale from the Arabian Nights tradition for adult and teen beginners learning English at Level 1 (CEFR A1). Adapted by Abraão Paula for the Comic Book Graded Readers series, it tells the story in 1,351 words and 305 headwords, with an original visual design, so a beginner can read a whole adventure of magic and danger in English.
At a glance
Aladdin is a poor young man in a busy desert city until a stranger arrives, says he is his uncle and leads him to a secret cave — but the man is a wicked magician who wants only the old lamp inside. Trapped underground with the lamp and a small ring, Aladdin discovers their magic, returns home rich and falls in love with the princess; yet the magician is not gone, and he has a clever, cruel plan. It is a Level 1 · A1 reader of magic and courage, asking: Can Aladdin save the princess, the palace and the lamp?
How it teaches
Every story page is a full-colour comic, and every short sentence stands next to the image that shows it. When the text says "The cave is dark" and the panel shows Aladdin alone with a faint glow in his hands, the reader understands the words and the fear at once. That is Dual-Coding Theory (Allan Paivio): language paired with pictures is easier to understand and remember.
The adaptation uses 305 headwords across 1,351 words, with sentences of no more than eight words and A1 grammar only — to be, simple present, simple past, will, there is / there are, can. The story's key objects — lamp, ring, cave, palace, gold — and its key verbs — rub, wish, trap, take — appear again and again, always with a picture.
The magician's trick is a good example of comprehensible input (Stephen Krashen). The reader sees the false smile and the outstretched hand before Aladdin understands, so every short line of dialogue carries tension. The learner reads to see what Aladdin will do next, not to analyse grammar.
Who it is for
This edition is written for adults and older teens. Aladdin is a young man, the magician is a real threat, and the story is about poverty, trust and learning to believe in yourself. The art has its own original look, and nothing is graphic, so the book is suitable for class.
The adaptation keeps the tale's essential beats: the false uncle, the cave, the lamp and the ring, the rise from poverty, the love for the princess and the magician's return. Knowing the outline helps the beginner; the suspense keeps the adult reader engaged.
It suits self-learners who love adventure and ESL/EFL teachers who want a complete, exciting classic for extensive reading.
