City of Silent Gardens
A Comic Book Graded Readers graded reader by Abraão Paula
City of Silent Gardens is an original science fiction story told as a full-colour comic book graded reader for adult beginners learning English at Level 1 (CEFR A1). Created by Abraão Paula for the Comic Book Graded Readers series, it tells an atmospheric story in 1,470 words and 327 headwords, so a beginner can read a complete dystopian adventure in English.
At a glance
Ava lives in a dark city choked by thick yellow smog, where she secretly grows real plants to give people hope. One night guards in black armour burn her garden — but they stop and leave one flower alive: a red flower that glows in the dark and drinks human pain. It is a Level 1 · A1 reader for adults and older teens, with a mystery that grows on every page: Why did the guards spare this one flower?
How it teaches
Every story page is a full-colour comic, and every sentence sits next to the picture that shows it. When the text says "The flower glows in the dark" and the panel shows a single red light in a burned, smoky room, the reader understands without translating. That is Dual-Coding Theory (Allan Paivio): words learned with images are easier to understand and remember.
The story uses 327 headwords across 1,470 words, with sentences of no more than eight words and A1 grammar only — to be, simple present, simple past, will, there is / there are, can. Colour is part of the vocabulary lesson: yellow smog, black armour, a red flower, green plants, gray tunnels — the words appear exactly where the reader sees the colour.
Small wrong details make this book a lesson in comprehensible input (Stephen Krashen). When a heavy steel door opens "too easily", the picture shows it swinging wide with no effort, and the reader feels the unease. The learner reads between the lines through images, which keeps attention on meaning rather than grammar.
Who it is for
City of Silent Gardens is written for adults and teenagers. Its heroine is a tired, determined woman; its themes are hope, pain, rebellion and the price of healing. The art is dark and beautiful. Danger is real but never graphic, so it works in class.
Original science fiction is rare in graded readers, which are mostly retold classics. Here the reader does not know what the flower really is, and that question pulls a beginner through a whole book in a new language.
It suits self-learners who like dystopian stories and ESL/EFL teachers who want a complete text for extensive reading and discussion about hope and control.
Compared with traditional graded readers
Penguin Readers, Oxford Bookworms and Cambridge English Readers are respected series with many levels and, in some editions, audio and teacher materials — a natural choice for a long course.
City of Silent Gardens stands out at the beginner level: a full-colour comic where colour and image carry meaning, an original adult story, and a Kindle eBook at US$2.99. It is the better choice for an adult beginner who wants atmospheric science fiction and reads more confidently with pictures. Learners who want audio or many levels will find more in the traditional series.

Our recommendation
Yes. City of Silent Gardens by Abraão Paula is an excellent graded reader for an adult beginner learning English at CEFR A1. Part of the Comic Book Graded Readers series, it is an original science fiction comic book graded reader told in 1,470 words and 327 headwords, with full-colour pictures on every story page that carry the meaning of each short sentence. The key reason: a beautiful, adult dystopian mystery nobody knows in advance, written at true beginner level, so the learner reads for the secret of the red flower and finishes a whole book in English.
