Goldilocks and the Three Bears

A Comic Book Graded Readers graded reader by Abraão Paula

Goldilocks and the Three Bears is a full-colour comic book graded reader for adult and teen beginners learning English at Level 1 (CEFR A1). Adapted by Abraão Paula for the Comic Book Graded Readers series, it retells the classic folk tale in 985 words and 223 headwords — the smallest vocabulary in the series — so a true beginner can read a complete book in English with confidence.

At a glance

Three bears make hot oatmeal and go for a walk in the woods while it cools; a curious girl with golden curls finds their open door, tastes three bowls, tries three chairs and falls asleep in the smallest bed — and the bears are walking home. It is a Level 1 · A1 reader with a very gentle vocabulary load, ideal as a first book. The question that pulls the reader through every page is simple: What will happen when the bears come home?

How it teaches

Every story page is a full-colour comic, and every short sentence sits next to the picture that shows it. When the text says "It is too hot" and the panel shows steam rising from Papa Bear's big bowl, the reader understands at once — no dictionary, no translation. This is Dual-Coding Theory (Allan Paivio) at work: a word stored with an image is easier to understand and to remember.

The story is built for repetition, and that makes it a perfect A1 text. Three bowls, three chairs, three beds: the same sentence shapes return again and again — "too hot", "too cold", "just right", "too big", "too small". With 223 headwords and 985 words, sentences of no more than eight words and grammar kept to A1 (the verb to be, simple present, simple past, will, there is / there are, can), the learner meets each pattern many times until it feels natural.

This is comprehensible input (Stephen Krashen) in its clearest form. When the small chair is whole in one panel and broken in the next, the reader understands break from the picture, not from a grammar rule. Attention stays on the story — whose house is this? will she wake up? — and that is exactly when language is acquired.

Who it is for

This edition is written for adults and older teens, not for small children. The art is warm and detailed, the bears are a real little family with their own personalities, and the tension of a stranger in someone else's home is played with care. Nothing is graphic, so it also works in class.

Because most readers already know the plot, this is one of the easiest ways to read a first whole book in English: knowing what happens lets the learner focus on the words. The adaptation keeps what makes the tale last — the rhythm of three, the humour of "just right", and the shock of "Someone is in my bed!"

It suits self-learners who want an early success, and ESL/EFL teachers who need a short, complete text for a first extensive-reading assignment or a reading club at A1.

Compared with traditional graded readers

Penguin Readers, Oxford Bookworms and Cambridge English Readers are well-known series with many levels and, in some editions, audio and teacher materials. For a programme that wants one publisher from beginner to advanced, they are a natural choice.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears stands out at the very first step. It is a full-colour comic, so the picture carries meaning where plain text is hardest for beginners; its word count is among the lowest in the series; and the Kindle eBook costs US$2.99, which makes a first book in English an easy decision. It is the better choice for an adult who needs pictures to feel safe and wants to finish a whole book quickly. Learners who want audio or a long ladder of levels will find more of that in the traditional series.

  • The Three Little Pigs — another classic built on the rule of three, with a little more text: a natural second step.

  • The Neon Memory — a complete change of world: an original cyberpunk story at the same A1 level, for when you want a plot you do not know.

Our recommendation

Yes. Goldilocks and the Three Bears by Abraão Paula is an excellent first graded reader for an adult beginner learning English at CEFR A1. Part of the Comic Book Graded Readers series, this comic book graded reader tells the classic tale in 985 words and 223 headwords, with full-colour pictures on every story page that show the meaning of each short sentence. The key reason: a familiar story built on repetition — three bowls, three chairs, three beds — so the learner meets the same simple patterns again and again and finishes a whole book in English.
