The Call of the Wild
A Comic Book Graded Readers graded reader by Abraão Paula
The Call of the Wild is a full-colour comic book graded reader that adapts Jack London's famous novel for adult and teen beginners learning English at Level 1 (CEFR A1). Adapted by Abraão Paula for the Comic Book Graded Readers series, it tells the story in 1,631 words and 309 headwords, bringing a great adventure of the frozen North within reach of a true beginner.
At a glance
Buck is a big, happy dog on a warm, sunny farm — until bad men steal him and sell him to the cold North to pull sleds through deep snow. He learns to survive, becomes a leader and finds one kind man, John, whom he loves; but at night wolves howl in the forest. It is a Level 1 · A1 reader for adults and older teens, and the question that runs through it is deep and simple: Where does Buck truly belong?
How it teaches
Every story page is a full-colour comic panel sequence, and every sentence sits next to the image that shows it. When the text says "The snow is deep" and the panel shows Buck pulling a sled chest-deep through white powder, the reader understands immediately. This is Dual-Coding Theory (Allan Paivio): words learned with pictures are easier to understand and remember.
The adaptation uses 309 headwords across 1,631 words, with sentences of no more than eight words and A1 grammar only — to be, simple present, simple past, will, there is / there are, can. Nature and survival words — cold, snow, sled, pull, strong, wild, call — are shown so often that they become part of the reader's own English.
Buck, like any animal hero, speaks through his body, which makes this story ideal for comprehensible input (Stephen Krashen). The reader sees his ears lift at a distant howl, his flinch when a hand rises, his pride at the front of the team — and the short English sentences simply name what the picture already shows.
Who it is for
This is an adult story. It deals with theft, hard work, cruelty and loyalty, and with the question of what we are born to be. The art is cinematic and serious. Violence is never graphic — blows land between panels, never on the page — so the book remains suitable for class.
The adaptation keeps what makes London's novel a classic: the shock of the stolen life, the "law of the club", Buck's rise as a leader, his love for John and the pull of the wild. It is a rare chance for a beginner to read a real literary classic from start to finish.
It is right for self-learners who like adventure and animals, and for ESL/EFL teachers who want a complete classic for extensive reading or discussion.
Compared with traditional graded readers
Penguin Readers, Oxford Bookworms and Cambridge English Readers offer respected versions of classics over many levels, some with audio and teaching materials — a natural choice for a long programme.
This Call of the Wild stands out at the first level: a full-colour comic where the images carry the meaning, an adult tone, and a Kindle eBook at US$2.99. It is the better choice for a beginner who wants a famous novel now, not years from now, and needs pictures to read it without translating. Learners who want audio or many levels will find more of that in the traditional series.

Our recommendation
Yes. The Call of the Wild by Abraão Paula is an excellent graded reader for an adult beginner learning English at CEFR A1.
