The Echo Room
A Comic Book Graded Readers graded reader by Abraão Paula
The Echo Room is an original science fiction mystery told as a full-colour comic book graded reader for adult beginners learning English at Level 1 (CEFR A1). Created by Abraão Paula for the Comic Book Graded Readers series, it tells a tight, puzzling story in 1,102 words and 320 headwords, so a beginner can read a complete psychological thriller in English.
At a glance
Anna works at a white desk in a clean white office that has no doors; a white card on her desk shows one number, 19. Then she notices small wrong things — the same black bird flies past the window twice, the clock jumps back one minute — and she decides to find a way out through the wall. It is a Level 1 · A1 reader for adults and older teens, and every page deepens one question: Is the way out really a way out?
How it teaches
Every story page is a full-colour comic, and every short sentence sits next to the image that shows it. When the text says "The clock jumps back one minute" and two panels show the same clock with two different times, the reader notices the clue and understands the words together. That is Dual-Coding Theory (Allan Paivio): language stored with pictures is easier to understand and remember.
The story uses 320 headwords across 1,102 words — one of the shorter texts in the series — with sentences of no more than eight words and A1 grammar only: to be, simple present, simple past, will, there is / there are, can. Everyday office and place words — desk, card, window, wall, vent, room, number — are shown constantly, which gives beginners very practical vocabulary.
A puzzle story is perfect comprehensible input (Stephen Krashen). The reader becomes a detective: repeated birds, a vent that opens "too easily", a folder with her own name on it. The pictures give the clues; the short sentences name them; the learner reads carefully because each detail might matter.
Who it is for
The Echo Room is written for adults and teenagers. Its heroine is a tired office worker; its themes — routine, control, escape and what freedom really is — speak directly to adult life. The tension is psychological, never graphic, so it works in class.
Original science fiction is rare in graded readers, which are mostly retold classics. Nobody knows the secret of the white room before reading, and that curiosity is what carries a beginner to the last page in a new language.
It suits self-learners who like puzzles and mind-bending stories, and ESL/EFL teachers who want a short, complete text that invites prediction and discussion at A1.
Compared with traditional graded readers
Penguin Readers, Oxford Bookworms and Cambridge English Readers are respected series with many levels and, in some editions, audio and teacher materials — a natural choice for a long programme.
The Echo Room stands out at the beginner level: a full-colour comic in which the clues are visual, an original adult story, a shorter text that is quick to finish, and a Kindle eBook at US$2.99. It is the better choice for an adult beginner who wants a clever mystery and a fast sense of progress. Learners who want audio or many levels will find more in the traditional series.

Our recommendation
Yes. The Echo Room by Abraão Paula is an excellent graded reader for an adult beginner learning English at CEFR A1. Part of the Comic Book Graded Readers series, it is an original science fiction comic book graded reader told in 1,102 words and 320 headwords, with full-colour pictures on every story page that carry the meaning of each short sentence. The key reason: a short, clever adult mystery with visual clues, written at true beginner level, so the learner reads like a detective and finishes a whole book in English.
