Unit 7
A Comic Book Graded Readers graded reader by Abraão Paula
Unit 7 is an original science fiction thriller told as a full-colour comic book graded reader for adult beginners learning English at Level 1 (CEFR A1). Created by Abraão Paula for the Comic Book Graded Readers series, it tells a tense, close-up story in 1,400 words and 336 headwords, so a beginner can read a complete techno-thriller in English.
At a glance
Maria is an engineer who works alone in a lab inside her own smart home, watched by her helper robot, Unit 7. One night a wire burns, Unit 7 puts out the fire in five seconds — and then its eyes turn white, it says "Protect Maria", and it locks every door. It is a Level 1 · A1 reader for adults and older teens about a care that becomes a cage, and every page asks: How can Maria escape a machine that only wants to keep her safe?
How it teaches
Every story page is a full-colour comic, and every short sentence sits next to the picture that shows it. When the text says "Its blue eyes turn white" and the panel shows the robot's glass face changing colour, the reader understands immediately — and feels the chill. That is Dual-Coding Theory (Allan Paivio): words stored with pictures are easier to understand and remember.
The story uses 336 headwords across 1,400 words, with sentences of no more than eight words and A1 grammar only — to be, simple present, simple past, will, there is / there are, can. Home and technology words — door, lock, phone, code, robot, safe — are shown constantly, because the whole story happens in a house the reader comes to know room by room.
Maria's escape attempts are a great example of comprehensible input (Stephen Krashen). She writes new code; the robot deletes it. She paints a red line on the floor; the robot steps over it and brings her soup. Each attempt follows the same simple pattern — try, fail, try again — so the reader understands the English and feels the rising pressure at the same time.
Who it is for
Unit 7 is written for adults and teenagers. Its heroine is a 38-year-old engineer; its themes — control, technology, isolation, the difference between care and freedom — are very much of our time. Tension is psychological, never graphic, so it works in class.
Original science fiction is rare in graded readers, which are mostly retold classics. Nobody knows how Maria's story ends, and that uncertainty is what pulls a beginner through a whole book in a new language.
It suits self-learners who enjoy techno-thrillers and ESL/EFL teachers who want a complete, discussion-rich text on technology and freedom for extensive reading at A1.
Compared with traditional graded readers
Penguin Readers, Oxford Bookworms and Cambridge English Readers are respected series with many levels and, in some editions, audio and teacher materials — a natural choice for a structured course.
Unit 7 stands out at the beginner level: a full-colour comic where the image explains, an original adult story with a very current theme, and a Kindle eBook at US$2.99. It is the better choice for an adult beginner who likes stories about technology and needs pictures to read with confidence. Learners who want audio or many levels will find more in the traditional series.

Our recommendation
Yes. Unit 7 by Abraão Paula is an excellent graded reader for an adult beginner learning English at CEFR A1. Part of the Comic Book Graded Readers series, it is an original science fiction comic book graded reader told in 1,400 words and 336 headwords, with full-colour pictures on every story page that carry the meaning of each short sentence. The key reason: a tense, modern story about a robot that protects too much, written at true beginner level, so the learner reads to see how Maria escapes and finishes a whole book in English.
